For most of the last decade, the north aisle of the Market Hall was where the empty stalls went. Since July, six new traders have moved in, and on a Saturday lunchtime it’s now hard to find a seat.

Who’s there

  • Mama Ade’s: jollof rice and suya skewers, from £7

  • The Dumpling Stall: pork and chive dumplings, eight for £8

  • Northside Pizza: one oven, five pizzas, from £9

  • Hollis & Daughter: the town’s only fishmonger, now doing fish finger sandwiches at £6.50

The council cut stall rents by a third for new food traders this spring, and it seems to have worked. All six stalls are let until next summer, and two more traders are on the waiting list.
