The bank on Market Square closed in 2021. Now its vault has soft play, its counter serves flat whites and its manager comes in every morning.

When the bank on Market Square shut, the town lost its last cash machine and a building nobody knew what to do with. Siblings Leah and Marcus Abbott turned it into Vault, a café with a playroom where the safe used to be.

The heavy door still swings, though it’s now propped open with a doorstop shaped like a hedgehog. And the old branch manager, Derek, comes in for a cheese scone most mornings.
