Ray Dunn has stood outside Riverside Primary every school morning since September 1995. He reckons he’s helped around 600,000 crossings, and that some of the children he walked across are now dropping off their own.

‘You get to know them,’ he says. ‘Who’s had a bad morning, who’s got a new baby at home, who’s forgotten their PE kit again. I can tell from how they walk.’

A send-off at half term

The school is holding a send-off on Friday 23 October at 3pm, and former pupils are invited. If you were walked across by Ray and want to sign the card, it’s at the school office until then.
